India is confronted by new challenges and offers considerable opportunities as the emerging giant on the international political and economic scene. A sustained cycle of accelerated economic growth has been faced by a Covid19-induced rupture; in a bid to recover a forcibly lost momentum Prime Minister Modi has proposed India as an alternative world manufacturing hub to a problematic China, raising considerable interest and controversy. Relations between New Delhi and Beijing are at a particularly low ebb, with serious implications for a wider area which are observed with concern by the United States, the third pinnacle of an uneasy geopolitical triangle. Italy has been similarly affected by the pandemic emergency, albeit in different ways, and as
both countries develop coherent recovery strategies they should seek the opportunity of enriching a long-established political relationship with new opportunities for fruitful cooperation and exchanges.
This is the first of a series of meetings promoted by AIICP – Association India Italy for Cooperation and Partnership – an independent Indo-Italian association established at the end of 2019 with the aim of promoting closer cooperation and relations between the two countries. AIICP believes that a better understanding of each other is an essential prerequisite of a fruitful
economic and commercial relationship and intends to devote special attention to meetings and contacts favouring an in depth knowledge of our respective societies and culture, addressing the stereotypes that persists on both sides and making full use of the complementarities highlighted by the natural empathy between our two peoples.
Karan Thapar will discuss with Lord Desai the present situation in covid-19 India, and Danilo Taino will moderate the ensuing Q&A session. The webinar will be in English only, with no translation, under Chatham House rules
